HISTORY

The Federal Government Dockyard Trades & Labour Council has been certified by the Public Service Staff Relations Board as the bargaining agent for the east coast ship repair workers since August 20th 1976.

There are approximately six hundred and fifty employees covered by this certificate, represented by ten local affiliates.

The Dockyard Council, as an organization dates back to the war years, when unions at the Halifax Dockyard formed a council of unions, to assist them in dealing with the employer. Some of the local unions that made up the initial council have charters that date back to the days before the First World War. These locals are among the oldest in Canada, and the Dockyard itself is the oldest establishment in North America continuously employing tradespeople. It was established in 1749 to service the ships of the British Royal Navy.
