"Medals and decorations have been awarded from ancient times to commemorate historic events. The first British war medals were those issued by Queen Elizabeth I for the victory over the Armada in 1588.
Canada followed the British system of honours which embraces three main sections of Orders of Chilvalry, Decorations and Medals.

These honours are bestowed upon persons having made some contribution to the common good beyond that required from the average person.
The responsibility for granting medals and decorations in Canada has changed over the years. On July 1, 1946 the last Canadian Honours List terminated war honours to civilians. Those for military honours have continued."
