Weapons of Battle - Guns

18th and 19th Century Dirks
It was often thought that the wearing of dirks was confined to Midshipmen and that they never wore any weapon other than the dirk.

Near the end of the 18th century and during the first two decades of the 19th century, commissioned and Flag Officers sometimes wore dirks.

17th Century Pistols
Certain numbers of pistols were issued to all naval vessels from the 17th century onwards. In 1757 the quantity of Sea Service pistols kept in reserve was as high as ten thousand. Unfortunately, almost no specimens from that period appear to have survived.
