Shearwater Yacht Club boat - Wynsum, A
Tanzer 7.5 is looking for club members to maintain the boat through the summer:
The main purpose of the club boat is to promote the ability for
members to have a club boat to sail as well for the club to conduct Adult Keel
Boat training through the season. Our acquisition of this boat has taken
into consideration our DND members to have a boat they can use through the
season without having to fund a boat on their own. in addition this club
boat is ideal for members to try out the sport before making a big investment on
their own for a boat. All club fees and maintenance costs are covered by
SYC.
We are currently seeking members that wish to take a senior position with the
ongoing maintenance and upkeep of our boat. If you are willing to commit
time to assist there may be sailing discounts provided so you can spend more
time on the water with this boat through the sailing season.
If you are interested please contact
Fred Rehse, Director Sail Training, SYC

List of Members looking for Crew positions: |
Nancy Witherspoon Marine Biologist and
Diver |
My sail training and experience is
historical, so I need a little refreshing!! I am primarily interested in
sociable sailing/racing as in the long run that is what I hope to do in the
Bahamas where I plan to spend my winters when I retire next year. I would say I
am still in the beginner category.
I learned to sail on a gaff rigged boat at Camp Onawa in Ontario when I was a
teenager. I like to think I was a natural at it as once I was comfortable with
it I used to go out on my own on the lake that the camp was on and enjoyed it
thoroughly. When I finished university I went to Australia and sailed there with
friends out of South Head in Sydney Harbour. When I moved to Nova Scotia I spent
some time sailing out of the Bedford Yacht Club, however that was sometime ago.
I have not raced before but have sailed on boats with mainsail and jib. I would
not classify myself as particularly interested in competitive sailing but I
might be, I really don't know.
I am by training and experience a marine biologist and a diver. I am a good
swimmer and am therefore very comfortable on the water. I am a proficient
canoeist and kayaker so as you can tell I love being around the ocean. I have
sailed on research vessels in the Gulf and on Georges Bank so I am also very
comfortable offshore and do not get seasick!!
I have worked on and around the ocean most of my career in fisheries and the
navy. I probably would enjoy trimming the jib the most but am happy to do
whatever is necessary to help out!! I was told that I should consider going out
and observing first and do not mind the idea of taking some training if
required. I hope to own and operate a little sail/row/motor boat combo out at
Owls Head where I will retire next year, so this should help me with that as
well!!
My only limitation is I do not own a car so will be travelling to the club by
bus and therefore I am not always immediately available. In addition I plan to
be at Owls Head (Eastern Shore) on long weekends (one weekend a month) starting
in May so I can't be counted on at those times. Hope that will work out for the
club.

Jared Wagner |
Jared Wagar
I am a reservist working at STAD for the summer, currently
I am only available weekends; starting mid June I will be moving to 4 on 4 off
shift work and am willing to volunteer during those times. I am currently
qualified in white sail 3 and intermediate cruising, although it has been almost
a year since I have taken a boat out. I am looking for as much experience as
possible on any type of sailboat; I have aspirations in purchasing my own boat
in the future.
I don’t have a car so please give me a couple days notice.
Please feel free to contact me at any of the email addresses below, or phone
number (evenings only).
