The Club was initially established as a Special
Interest Club by permission of the Base Commander
as part of the Personnel Support Program at CFB
Halifax. The origins of the Club started in
1949 when at that time it was part of the Royal
Canadian Navy Sailing Association (RCNSA). The
Club was originally housed in an old seaplane
hanger near the present day Club's location.
From 1957 to 1967 the Club was co-located with
the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron at a
location known as Seaward Defence, now the site
of the Halifax Container Pier. RCNSA relocated
to Shearwater, to make way for the construction
of the container piers, in 1967, to the current
site which is part of Canadian Forces Base
Shearwater. Over the years the facilities have
expanded significantly to the present facility
that includes a two story club house, several
utility and storage buildings, a marina and
mooring field. The premise of the growth has
been primarily based on contributions of the
club members for labor, knowledge and funding.
The principle of "self-help" has become a
cornerstone of the Club's successful operations.
It is this "self-help" principle that has
fostered a community spirit, and kept the club
operational costs low.
The name of the Club was later named Canadian
Forces Sailing Association (CFSA) Halifax Squadron
and further integrated into the Canadian Military.
The Club continues to operate under the auspices
of CFB Halifax and in 1982 was directed to enter
the CFB Shearwater Non Public Fund (NPF)
organization. The 1986 amendment to Chapter
2/86 to the Canadian Forces Administrative
Orders (CFAO) 50-5 limited CFSA to Service
personnel. The Club elected to retain its
broader based membership and formed the Shearwater
Yacht Club as a Recreation club of CFB Shearwater
under the provisions of CFAO 50-20. The
Shearwater Yacht Club was officially created at
the Spring General Meeting in April 1986 with all
members of CFSA Halifax Squadron being granted
membership in the CFB Shearwater Yacht Club.
The constitution for the SYC was presented and
approved at a Special General Meeting in May 1986
. After a period of uncertainty as to the
location of the CFSA Halifax Squadron, the SYC
and CFSA formed a single Club at the SGM of April
1990 under one Commodore but with a double set of
flag officers to represent the different interests
of CFSA and SYC.
