Introduction to Sailing

Age Group:       7-10

Focus:               Introduction to sailing in a structured, but fun, way.

Prerequisites:    None

Content:            CYA White Sail 1

Equipment:        Angelfish Pram

Duration:           One week

Cost:                 $ 110 + Tax

Schedule:

1.       07 - 11 Jul

2.       14 - 18 Jul

3.       21 - 25 Jul

4.       28 Jul - 01 Aug

5.       04 - 08 Aug

6.       11 - 15 Aug

7.       18 - 22 Aug

Youth Learn to Sail (Basic)

Age Group:       8-16

Focus:               Competent white sail dinghy sailor in winds up to 9 knots.

Prerequisites:    None

Content:            CYA White Sail 1, 2 and 3

Equipment:        Angelfish Pram, Club 420

Duration:           Three weeks

Cost:                 $ 330 + Tax

Schedule:

1.       30 Jun – 18 Jul

2.       4 Aug – 22 Aug

 

 

Youth Learn to Sail (Advanced)

Age Group:       10-16

Focus:               Competent dinghy sailor, including spinnaker, in winds up to 14 knots.

Prerequisites:    CYA White Sail 3

Content:            CYA Bronze 4 & 5

Equipment:        Club 420

Duration:           Three weeks

Cost:                 $ 330 + Tax

Schedule:

1.       21 Jul - 8 Aug

 

 

 

Adult Learn to Sail (Basic)

Age Group:       16+

Focus:               Competent white sail dinghy sailor in winds up to 9 knots.

Prerequisites:    None

Content:            CYA White Sail 1, 2 and 3

Equipment:        Club 420

Duration:           28 Hours – four evenings and two full Saturdays

Cost:                 $ 160 + Tax

Schedule:

1.      Mon 07 & 14 Jul           6 - 9 PM

2.      Wed 09 & 16 Jul           6 - 9 PM

3.      Sat 12 & 19 Jul             9 AM - 5 PM

 

 

Adult Learn to Sail (Advanced)

Age Group:       16+

Focus:               Competent dinghy sailor, including spinnaker, in winds up to 14 knots.

Prerequisites:    CYA White Sail 3

Content:            CYA Bronze 4 & 5

Equipment:        Club 420

Duration:           42 Hours – six evenings and three full Saturdays

Cost:                 $ 240 + Tax

Schedule:

1.       Mon 11, 18, 25 Aug       6 - 9PM

2.       Wed 13, 20, 27 Aug       6 - 9PM

3.       Sat 16, 23, 30 Aug         9 AM - 5PM

 

Learn to Cruise (Basic)

Age Group:       14+

Focus:               Competent keelboat day skipper in familiar waters and moderate conditions.

Prerequisites:    None

Content:            CYA Basic Cruising

Equipment:        Tanzer 7.5

Duration:           Four days

Cost:                 $ 440 + Tax

Schedule:

1.       27 -30 Jun

2.       01 – 04 Aug

3.       29 Aug – 01 Sep

 

 

  

Daily Course Times:  0900 – 1600, unless otherwise specified.

 

Early registration is encouraged because course loading is limited in order to provide optimum instructor/student ratios.

 

All prices are subject to HST. Special tax receipts for recreational programs will be provided.

 

Shearwater Yacht Club members and family members of active Military receive a 10% discount on all fees.

 

All fees must be paid in full at registration. Refunds will be offered at the following rate, should an early withdrawal from a course become necessary:

            One Week course – 50% of the fee, up to the second day of the course

            Two Week course – 50% of the fee, up to the third day of the course

            Three Week course – 50% of the fee, up to the end of the first week of the course

Course participants of the dingy courses should bring the following items to class:

 

D.O.T. approved Personal Floatation Device (PFD)

Sunscreen & Hat

Lunch & snacks for both a.m. & p.m.

Lots of drinking water

Change of clothes & extra socks

Proper rubber-soled foot wear (no flip-flops; something that will stay on while in the water)

Rain gear

Swimsuit & towel

Shorty Wetsuit recommended

Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (CPS)

The Halifax and Dartmouth area's are serviced by Alderney Squadron and the Halifax Squadron of the CPS.  They are units of Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons, an organization similar to United States Power Squadrons. Both are non-profit organizations consisting of members who volunteer their time to promote marine safety and education throughout the private boating community.
